About the Department

Civil Engineering is a part of the engineering profession that provides the basic prerequisites of humanity from the beginning of the civilization. It focuses on Planning, Development, Design, Construction and Maintenance of the entire physical structure and infrastructure required for sustainability of the society.

The college took a plunge into this immensely refreshing and challenging field of Civil Engineering with the setting up of the Department at SSMIET during the year 2011

The academic activities are so planned in a way to accelerate the understanding of fundamental principles and also to nurture creative ability to handle the challenges in the field of Civil Engineering. It also aims to train the young minds and make them well acquainted with latest technological developments and emerging trends in the realm of Civil Engineering by an unique strategy camped with good practical and industrial exposure. A pool of competent and experienced laboratories specialized in Strength of Materials, Hydraulics, Surveying, Geotechnical, AutoCAD, Environmental Engineering and Concrete& Highway which are all at par with the research labs, are available in the department.

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)

PEO 1: Graduates will be able contribute to the development of sustainable infrastructure.

PEO 2: Graduates will be professional Civil Engineers with ethical and societal responsibility.

PEO 3: Graduates as part of an organization or as Entrepreneurs, will continue to learn to hone-up evolving technologies.

PEO 4: Graduates will be able to work as a team in intra and interdisciplinary endeavours for development of new ideas and products for the betterment of society.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES (POS)

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
  12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

 HYDRAULICS LABORATORY:

The Hydraulics Laboratory was established from the inception of Civil Engineering department. It contains a floor area of 224.3 Sq.Metres. The Laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary equipment along with their accessories, as required for B.E Civil, Automobile engineering and Mechanical Engineering courses in the syllabus. The Laboratory has been kept with pace of modern technological advancements by purchasing new equipment as and when required. The laboratory includes Flow measurement set-ups and Turbo Machines. The laboratory experiments include the study of open channel flow, closed conduit flow, pump and turbine characteristics which enhance the students to acquire thorough knowledge on the practical utility of these devices in the field.

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LABORATORY: 

The strength of materials laboratory measuring an area of 111.32 sq.m. was established at the time of starting of Civil Engineering Department in the year 2012. This laboratory is fully equipped with all necessary machines with accessories for conducting lab. Classes for the under-graduate courses in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. This laboratory has equipments and tools worth Rs.27.79 lakhs which include Universal Testing Machine computerized & servo control of 1000 KN capacity . Besides, there are number of other equipment like Hardness testing machines, muffle Furnace , Electronic extensometer, compresometer,   Spring testing machine, Torsion testing machines,  Impact testing machine, etc. available for the regular practical classes. Sophisticated equipments are being periodically purchased to modernize the laboratory and also to train the students. This laboratory is one of the premier laboratories for the purpose of Consultancy and Testing works. Almost all government agencies and private organizations in and around Dindigul have access to this laboratory for consultancy / testing services.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY: 

The Geotechnical Engineering laboratory was established in 2013. The laboratory is equipped with all modern machineries required for advanced research and consultancy services. All the equipment’s mentioned in the syllabus content of the undergraduate programme can be carried out in the laboratory. The area of the laboratory is 167.25 Sq.m. The total cost of the equipment’s around Rs.14.20 lakhs which includes triaxial compression testing apparatus, direct shear test apparatus and unconfined compression testing apparatus. Facilities to conduct field tests like Plate Load Test and Standard Penetration Test are available.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY: 

The Environmental Engineering Laboratory is well equipped with Specialized instruments like COD Digester, Muffle furnace, Hot Air Oven, Kjeldhal apparatus, Ion Analyzer, Digital pH meter, Turbidity meter, Conductivity meter, BOD Incubator, Flame Photometer, Jar Test Apparatus and Spectrophotometer to meet the academic requirements of undergraduate programme and for full-fledged consultancy activities in the field of water quality analysis.

SURVEYING LABORATORY:

The Surveying Laboratory is equipped with the instruments and tools that students use throughout the surveying course. Students learn techniques for gathering field data with both traditional and modern instruments and demonstrate their proficiency on weekly lab exercises and a comprehensive mini project and final exam. Each lab group – typically four students – has a dedicated set of instruments to use, including Dumpy level, theodolite, and total station. Each group also has leveling staffs, tripods, tape, chain and other common surveying tools. The lab also serves as office space for the surveying instructor and teaching assistants, so surveying students have direct access to help for material discussed in lecture and lab. In addition, students have opportunity to use total station, GPS, Digital level equipment which enables horizontal vertical and angular measurements in single operation.

CADD LABORATORY: 

 

 

 

 

 

The CADD centre provides a modern facility for instruction in a variety of computer software packages. The Lab has equipped with more than 70 Computer Systems with high end latest Configuration hardware. The software available includes STAAD Pro, REVIT Architecture, AutoCAD, RESIST and QGIS.

CONCRETE AND HIGHWAYS LABORATORY:

This laboratory contains different equipments used to categorize concrete and bitumen binders in terms of their properties and quality control and provides an additional exposure to the testing of construction materials for the Civil Engineering students. The major equipments available in the laboratory are Aggregate Impact test machine, Los Angel’s Abrasion Testing machine, Deval abrasion testing machine, Aggregate Crushing Machine for finding the material properties. Slump cone, Flow table, Vee-Bee constiometer, and Compaction factor are used for finding workability on fresh concrete likewise Compressive, flexural, split tensile strength, modulus of elasticity of harden concrete also tested in this laboratory. Standard penetrometer, Ring and Ball apparatus, Standard Tar viscometer, Ductility testing machine for bitumen, Marshall Apparatus, Bitumen Centrifuge Extractor is used for finding bitumen property. Consultancy for various construction firms are done widely in this lab. Thus a hand on exposure to these tests assists the students to expertise themselves to be a civil engineer with better confidence and assessment skills.
